The latest mobile airers are worlds apart from the wooden clothes horses of yesteryear.
If you favour the tumble dryer, or putting your washing on an outdoor line, and have an old airer in a cupboard somewhere that you inherited as somebody else’s cast-off when you left home, but would never dream of using, take a look at some of the designs available for today’s lifestyles.
The new generation of modern airers have been designed with great attention to detail, and have lots of practical features to make them user friendly. Look carefully and you’ll find airers with the capacity to take sheets, and yet still be easily moved around the house or outside through standard doorways, even when they’re full of washing.
Modern materials mean todays airers are usually lightweight and durable. Watch out for features that may appeal to you – for instance, airers made out of non-corrosive materials so they can be left outside. If you’ve a washing line in the sun, but like to dry some items in the shade, an airer that can be used outside is great.
Another handy feature is if the airer’s adaptable enough to be put up in different shapes to suit the type of washing you’ve been doing. And thick rails can be helpful, as well. Thicker rails are less likely to leave “wire marks” and so they can reduce the need to iron your clothes.
Airers now foldaway with ease!
If room in your home both for putting up an airer and storing it away is a problem, that’s something you can overcome, too. You needn’t be left with a cumbersome airer that’s hard to store when you’re not using it, as there are airers available which fold down flat to be put away in their box, or slipped under a bed.
Some have the capacity to be moved around, and also mounted against a wall or door, and folded flat against it once the washing’s dry. Alternatively, if floor space is really tight, you may want to consider a ceiling mounted clothes airer, utilising unused air space.
Using an airer to either dry or air clothes (and there are always those days when collars and thick items still have that dampness about them when they’ve been out on the line), means you’ll save money by not using the tumble dryer.
Instead you’ll be taking advantage of the heating you’re already using in your home, rather than pushing up your power bills.
It all adds up to the fact that a good airer is an essential item for modern homes, and the way we live today.
